Oshawa man bilked rental scam victims of more than $50K, police say

Durham Regional Police allege an Oshawa man defrauded over 35 people out of more than $50,000 in an apartment rental scam.According to investigators, the suspect posted apartment ads on Facebook Marketplace, advertising apartments for rent in London, Ontario.Police say the suspect would collect first and last month rent from his alleged victims, and then vanish, ceasing all communications.On Sunday, May 14, 2023, police arrested Ghana Ariharan, 27, in the Simcoe Street North and Conlin Road area of Oshawa.He’s facing several charges including fraud over $5,000 and possession of proceeds obtained by crime.On Monday, Toronto police issued a release in a separate, but similar rental scam investigation.In that case, police said they’re searching for Cem Devrim Turetken, 49, after he was accused of defrauding several people with phony online apartment listings. NEW YORK (AP) — An infant formula recalled over potential bacteria contamination was distributed to retailers across eight states after the recall began, according to a release published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration this week.Perrigo Co. issued a voluntary March recall of certain lots of its Gerber Good Start SoothePro Powdered Infant Formula “out of an abundance of caution” due to the possible presence of Cronobacter sakazakii, a germ that can cause serious or deadly infections in infants. The recall includes Gerber Good Start formula manufactured between Jan. 2 and Jan. 18 at the Perrigo’s Eau Claire, Wisconsin, facility. June byelections will be monitored for foreign interference, government says

Chicken loose on subway tracks halts service in Mexico City

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Service was temporarily halted on a line of Mexico City’s subway system after a chicken got loose on the tracks.Video distributed by the city’s Metro system showed the electricity cut off at a station near the city’s center on Monday.The video showed maintenance personnel and civil defense officers in hard hats chasing the chicken around the tracks with brooms, gloves and a trash bag.The chicken eluded several attempts to capture it before one worker tossed his coat over the animal. The metro system said service was quickly restored after the incident.Mexico City’s subway system has been plagued by a series of incidents that city officials had claimed were sabotage. B.C. casinos will require all to show government ID under self-exclusion program

VANCOUVER — Everyone who enters a British Columbia casino will soon be required to present government-issued identification, in what the BC Lottery Corporation says is an initiative to support people who have registered for self-exclusion.The corporation says the measure will be rolled out this summer, with more details to be announced in coming weeks, including the implementation date.It says security staff will scan IDs that will be automatically checked against a list of people who are taking part in the Game Break self-exclusion program, but the system will not store any personal information for people allowed to enter a casino.The Crown corporation says in a statement it wants to have the “healthiest players in the world” and participants in the Game Break program believe identification checks are the best way of enforcing their choice not to be allowed into casinos.It says players are already required to carry identification, which may be requested to confirm age o...

1 dead, 1 hurt after shooting on Eisenhower; inbound lanes closed

CHICAGO — One person is dead and another is wounded after a shooting on the Eisenhower Expressway near Cicero Avenue, resulting in the closure of inbounds lanes. Just before 11:45 a.m., ISP responded to an expressway shooting that wounded a man and a woman. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition, where the man was later pronounced dead. Jamie Foxx being treated in Chicago: report No word at this time as to what led to the shooting.
