Widespread flooding has forced thousands of evacuations and rescues in Cuba.Heavy rain in the central and eastern portions of the country caused water to rise this weekend.According to reports on the island, more than 7,000 people have had to leave their homes after they were damaged or destroyed. Many have also lost their crops.Rescuers rushed families on to their planes to fly them to safety.Men, women and children have been taken to state shelters or homes of relatives after waiting in their flooded neighborhoods for help to arrive.“They came to our rescue early, and we didn’t want to go out, but we had to go out now.” said a man through a translator.In some areas, roads and bridges collapsed under the weight of the floodwaters.

A motorcycle rider is dead after crashing while fleeing a traffic stop in Hyannis on Sunday afternoon, officials said.An officer who tried to stop the motorcyclist for a traffic violation on Route 28 near Garden Lane in Hyannis around 1:45 p.m. said the rider fled north onto Bearse’s Way, where they crashed into a vehicle near Enterprise Road, according to police.The rider was taken to Cape Cod Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Brockton man accused of shooting Boston police officer set to face a judge

A Brockton man accused of shooting of Boston police officer during an attempted armed robbery in Roxbury is expected to face a judge on Monday.Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said the officer initially saw a pizza delivery driver being robbed at gunpoint and approached a suspect, later identified as 23-year-old John Lazare, of Brockton, who opened fire in the area of Cedric Street.Cox said the officer was shot twice and was rushed to Boston Medical Center for treatment. He is in stable condition.Two other officers were also injured, though Cox said their injuries were not firearm-related.“Thank goodness that officer who was struck multiple times is still with us” said Cox, who also called the situation “troubling.”There was a large police presence seen in Roxbury after the shooting. A New York man is facing criminal charges in connection with a shooting in Manchester, New Hampshire on Saturday night, officials said.Officers responding to a reported shooting in the area of 104 Orange St. around 5:30 p.m. found a 27-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg, according to Manchester police. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatement.After reviewing surveillance video, police arrested Gil Diaz, 26, of Queens, on charges of first-degree assault, being a felon in possession of a dangerous weapon, falsifying physical evidence, and resisting arrest.

BONN, Germany (AP) — A growing number of companies are pledging to cut their greenhouse gas emissions to ” net zero ” as part of global efforts to tackle climate change, but that goal is rarely supported by a credible plan, according to a report published Monday.The idea behind net zero is to stop adding planet-warming gas to the atmosphere, either by preventing the emissions in the first place or removing an equivalent amount through natural or technological means. Scientists say the world needs to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) compared with pre-industrial times.The net-zero goal has gained traction in recent years.
