Free country, let’s keep it that way“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” is a quote commonly attributed to Voltaire. Similarly, as I grew up in the shelter of the freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights that “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech” I’d hear and say “Hey, it’s a free country. You can say what ever you want, I just don’t have to agree with it.”Oh how I wish that that was universally accepted, but it is evidenced that it is not.As exampled by the apparent “doxxing” action at Harvard. The publishing of the names, faces and often addresses of those who express an unpopular point of view as a punishment for their having the temerity to state it. It’s as if to goad some un-American loony into an act of violence against these individuals. This column doesn’t always abound with praise for President Joe Biden and his administration. This week’s is an exception.On Oct. 8, the day after the greatest atrocity in Jewish history since Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, Jews in Israel and the diaspora woke up without a leader. The prime minister of Israel has never been, in a formal sense, the leader of the Jews — even when the office was held by people far worthier than Benjamin Netanyahu.But the prime minister does have the most important job in the Jewish world, which is to ensure that Israel be a safe haven for Jewish life. The Jewish people have long memories; whatever happens next, Netanyahu will be remembered, irrevocably, as the man who failed — not tragically, much less heroically, but selfishly, arrogantly, despicably. He maintains political authority but is devoid of moral authority. It hardly should be necessary to condemn the killing of a 6-year-old boy, but the death of Wadea Al-Fayoume, a student at Central Elementary School in Plainfield, Illinois, is too disturbing to ignore.Wadea was stabbed 26 times on Saturday and later pronounced dead after an attack that also seriously wounded his mother. The child was targeted by his landlord, local officials believe, because his family is Palestinian American. The FBI has opened an investigation into what appears to be a hate crime; the level of hate needed to stab a small child is beyond our understanding.In expressing our outrage at the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7 on ordinary Israeli citizens, we made the point that not condemning such barbarism without equivocation would only make it harder to decry the inhumane events that we feared would follow, although we were thinking of the Middle East rather than suburban Chicago. It was quintessential Jordan McLaughlin.Naz Reid had just buried a 3-point shot early in the fourth quarter of the Timberwolves’ preseason game in New York on Saturday. The Knicks’ ensuing inbounds pass following Reid’s long-range basket was slightly lackadaisical.And, sure enough, McLaughlin made them pay. He jumped the pass to steal the inbounds. Shrewsbury, Missouri bookkeeper sentenced for embezzling $849,000

LOUIS – A bookkeeper from a St. Louis suburb was sentenced in federal court on Wednesday after admitting to a multi-year, six-figure embezzlement scheme.Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri said Cora Willard, 47, ran Red Hen Business Services, a bookkeeping, payroll, and money-management assistance company.In May 2019, a money management business hired Willard to handle its books. As a result, Willard was given unfettered access to the company’s bank accounts and financial records.Willard told the court that between Nov. 29, 2019, and June 10, 2022, she made nearly 100 unauthorized wire transfers from the victim’s bank account to herself, stealing approximately $849,000 in total. Arenado started off his MLB career with 10 consecutive NL Gold Glove honors from 2013 to 2022. The Gold Glove Awards recognize the top defensive players at each position in any given year. 10 years later: Joe Kelly’s epic NLCS standoff and the Cardinals’ latest NL pennant Rawlings announced its 2023 Gold Glove finalists at each position, in addition to super utility nominees, on Wednesday. Three finalists are eligible for any given position.
