Two former directors of the local nonprofit Violence in Boston (VIB) and her husband were charged in a superseding indictment Thursday in connection with a scheme to defraud the City of Boston out of COVID-19 relief funds and rental assistance money, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Monica Cannon-Grant, 42, and Clark Grant, 39, both of Taunton, were charged by a federal grand jury in a 27-count superseding indictment, returned Thursday with three counts of wire fraud conspiracy, 17 counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy, and one count of making false statements to a mortgage lending business.The new wire fraud charges center on alleged schemes to obtain and utilize pandemic assistance funds from the Boston Resiliency Fund for purposes not disclosed to the city, including for their own personal benefit and to fraudulently obtain rental assistance payments from Boston’s Office of Housing Stability. Boston woman to be arraigned for larceny after allegedly making $500K in Burlington credit card scam

A 19-year-old Boston woman is set to be arraigned Friday for her alleged role in a credit card scam that police say involved her making over half-a-million dollars’ worth of fraudulent charges.Ariel Foster of Boston is now facing a charge of Larceny Over $1,200, according to the Burlington Police Department.In a statement, Burlington Police Chief Thomas Browne said her arrest came weeks after detectives were called to the Lovisa jewelry store in the Burlington Mall for a report of a credit card machine breach on Feb. 22.Browne said an investigation found that on three dates that month, some items scanned at the register had their prices increased, and that the cost of the items was then allegedly refunded to a credit card belonging to Foster, an employee at the store.Police identified eight such transactions, adding up to a total loss of $547,187. SAN DIEGO -- A man was allegedly stabbed and beaten by a suspect in the East Village area early Friday morning, authorities said.According to the San Diego Police Department, the victim, who's age and identity have not been released, walked up to another person at 1050 B St. and said he needed help due to his injuries. The exact time of the encounter has not been specified. US charity calls on Egypt to release hunger-striking poet

Pen America demanded Thursday that Egyptian authorities release Galal al-Behairy, who was first detained in March of 2018 and later handed a three-year sentence for spreading false news and insulting Egypt’s military. In a leaked letter that coincided with the fifth anniversary of his arrest, al-Behairy said he would refuse food and medication until he secured his freedom.
